How Konecranes modem upgrade enhances your operational safety

Embracing new standards for cybersecurity

 

The European Commission's Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU) Delegated Act 2022/30 now coming into effect helps prevent unauthorized access, identity theft, and financial loss. It reduces risks of cyberattacks, botnets (network of computers, devices, or systems that have been infected with malware and are controlled remotely by a cybercriminal—often without the owners' knowledge), and service disruptions caused by compromised devices.

Avoiding, for example, a hacker to inject a malware to get full control of the MD4 of your lift truck and of all related functions (control of brake and acceleration pedal etc), affecting the main driver functionalities. 

While our modems and connections were already secured – following our ISO 27100 certified platform – starting from August 1, 2025 we've taken proactive steps to upgrade all our lift trucks (not only for EU countries) with a new modem that complies with the new (RED) Directive. The RED framework ensures consistent safety, spectrum efficiency, and compatibility across the EU, meaning fewer issues with device compatibility, updates, and connectivity.

 

 

 

A model of cybersecurity excellence

 

The new modem is a key part of our efforts to protect data and maintain the integrity of our material handling equipment. This upgrade is not just a response to regulatory requirements but a strategic move to set ourselves apart in the market. By implementing these changes ahead of the 2027 regulations, we're setting a benchmark for cybersecurity in the automation industry.

This is just one step towards the compliance with the new upcoming regulations - such as the EU Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) - Regulation (EU) 2024/2847 and compliance with IEC 62443.
